Team Zombie Versus Team Vamp: Are the Living Dead Only Beating the Bloodsuckers Online?

So, as part of my ongoing education as a YA author, one of my weekly duties – though it feels more like a “treat” – is to take a field trip to the local mega-bookstore and troll the YA aisle for an hour or so.


I’m usually there before school lets out for the day, and rarely on weekends, so I’m pretty much alone in my research of what’s hot, what’s not, what’s faced out, what’s spine-in and all the other indicators of how trends are pulling, or what’s got “heat,” at least in the brick and mortar world.


I guess because now that Vamplayers is out in the world I’m hypersensitive to this whole “zombies versus vamps” grudge match, but I could swear that despite all the zombie hype online, in the actual aisles of my local bookstore at least, the vamps are still winning by a mile.


Yes, Rot & Ruin was front and center and deservedly so because Jonathan Mayberry and his sensitive, sophisticated and challenging undead world ROCKS, but… where were all the copies of Warm Bodies? Where was Zombie Blondes? Where was You Are So Undead to Me? Where was Never Slow Dance With a Zombie?


Nowhere, that’s where. I couldn’t find them, and I’ve been looking for weeks on end. I figure if they’re gone one week, maybe they’re sold out. (Go, Zombies!) Two weeks, three weeks… maybe they’re not stocking them at all.


Now, these were the books – well, Rot & Ruin wasn’t out back then, and I think Warm Bodies came right toward the end – that inspired me to write Zombies Don’t Cry in the first place, that basically created the YA living dead genre out of thin air.


And now I can’t barely find them anywhere in “real” life.


And it’s not because they’re older and a little outdated, because I still see the same vampire paperbacks that were on the shelves next to Zombie Blondes and Zombie Queen of Newbury High once upon a time: Sucks to Be Me, the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, and of course the Morganville Vampires and Thirst series and Vampire Diaries (all awesome, of course).


I know this isn’t entirely scientific. You may be shaking your head right now because at your bookstore where you live, there are tons of zombie books and maybe I just live in a zombie-bigoted city/state (probs).


Still, I alternate bookstores every few weeks or so – there are about five really good, really big chain bookstores within 25-30 miles of where I live – and the same is true for ALL those stores as well.


So I have to ask: are zombies only winning the war online? Or are they even winning at all? Online anyway, it sure *seems* like they are. I mean, in my world, I pretty much see a new FREE or 99-cent or indy or self-published or even traditionally published YA zombie book like every other day.


And it’s not just the new releases but the energy, the vibe, I feel about zombies online. There just seems to be a general “Team Zombie” vibe online.


For instance, I don’t think it has the same heat yet as, obviously, how people are freaking over every “sneak peek” still from the Hunger Games movie, but I can sense a genuine eagerness in YA folks about the Warm Bodies movie and the stills they’ve leaked from that set seem to genuinely get a pretty awesome response from all my Facebook, Twitter and Blogger friends, who aren’t necessarily Team Zombie but are for sure Team YA.


So, I dunno, I’m just not feeling that online zombie love when I walk into a brick and mortar bookstore. But what about you? Am I wrong, or just leaning too much toward the whole “zombies as underdogs” thing? I don’t think I am, because it is still really vamp-heavy out here.


So let me have it: are you Team Living Dead or Team Bloodsucker? I’m all ears…

Ok I LOVE Rusty' books. The writing is wicked good, and the story line in Vamplayer is a unique take on the Vamp world. I was instantly pulled in by Lily, she is an amazing girl then Vampire! All the aspects of the world are fully realized and very interesting. 








Vamplayers? Sounds good right? NOPE they are players looking for a hottie girl to turn then let loose and start a newbie vamp infestation! BAD! Lily and her sisters get in over their head. I loved the characters. No really all of them are so well written that you can get into each of them. The story is just Wicked Awesome! twists, turns, ACTION and some romance it's all jam packed. You so need to read this!

Music can be a great inspiration for my writing. Listening to a song immediately brings to mind a setting, conveys the essence of a character, and/or sets a mood. Now I have an Interview for you with... Will who I think is just amazing!

Hi Will, I just have a few questions for you today. I don't want to keep you from Sam and everyone for very long.

So, if you don't mind me asking, what do you miss the most about your life before all this craziness started?

You know, for me the craziness started pretty far back, which supposedly happens for kids who are exposed to early trauma and who also carry the Helmann’s Disease gene. So, yeah, lots of crazy for lots of years. But things were pretty good for awhile back when Mom was alive and Dad had left us/been kicked out. I miss my mom listening to me give her detailed accounts of whatever we’d just studied in history. She could really listen, my mom. I miss eating out with her and Mick at this Chinese restaurant. I don’t even know the name but they had amazing Garlic Pan Fried Chicken and Hot and Sour Soup.

What do you love doing the most? the least? with your rippling.

I just like going out late at night when places are peaceful, like Las Abs, anyway. The sidewalks kind of roll up there by ten at night. And I like to move in and out of buildings. Not all stalker-ish. I mean, I like the going-through-different-walls part. You never know when you’ll find a surface that is just amazing. It’s how I discovered rock walls. Least, um, well, I’ve never had any down side to this. Well, unless you count being chased by evil neo-Nazis. But they’re more after Sam and others than me simply because so far Mick’s kept me off the radar.

If you could take your sister Mick anywhere, well where would that be?

She would never, EVER admit this, but I am sure she’d love some kind of crazy girl-y shopping spree. I’d like to take her to London or New York City where she could speak the language and just give her one of those gold cards. Or titanium cards. Whatever it is that has no limit on it. She’d totally roll her eyes at me if I suggested it. But she’d go. And she’d love it. And I’d carry the bags and packages and stuff.

*I sigh cause that is so sweet and just like him*

Now same thing with Sam...take her anywhere, where would it be?

We’d both like to see the Taj Mahal. Romantic. Nuff said.

*jealous*

If you had a job (like you could have one right now in this mess) what would you want to be doing?

I’d kind of like to run a pizza joint. And I wouldn’t mind driving people around Yosemite. You know, like a tour guide. Showing them stuff.

One last question then I will let you get going *wink* Can you tell us your top 3 songs that you love?

Dude, I never know the names of the songs I really like. Give me a sec, and maybe I can try. There’s this one called Unfurl that I thought was really haunting, but kind of hopeful, you know? I think it’s a couple years old. And I like Greensleeves. My mom used to sing it. It was really, um, haunting. Geez. There’s like a theme here. Okay, now I gotta think of something cheerful. How about I’m a Believer? I think I heard it on Shrek first. And now that I’ve met Sam, I am definitely a believer.

*reaches for Will's hand to shake* Thank you so much for taking a bit of time with me. I just want you to know that when you leave I will jump up and down and squeee like a little girl for getting to meet with you *Huge Grin*

Review:

From the moment I started reading Rippler, I just knew that this was going to be an wicked good series. I was so right! The writing throughout is spot on.

Sam is still growing as a person and you can see that growth in this one still. I love how she has taken what happens to her in stride. Does she freak out? yes, as she should but she also steps up and does what needs to be done. Being away from Will in this book is a huge part of this book. I will tear you up and it should. 

Will is just as torn up at being apart from Sam. Just like her though he does what needs to be done *finally* he did need prodding to get with it, which I thought was sweet.

This book brings everything to a head and there is action, suspense and love! You will not see what is coming until it's too late. While the ending to the series is great it could also mean an opening for more ... later.  GET IT NOW!!

I was asked to post giving my top ten places to vacation and/or want to vacation. I am not a world traveler. In fact, I am almost a non-traveler. Vacations in my life have been few and far between. The last time I went anywhere it was five years ago and that was to a funeral in NY. Pretty dull, right? I understand that most everyone needs to get away from it all, have a change of scenery and re-charge the old batteries. As for me, I really don't care one way or the other. I'm content where I am. Call me peculiar (it's OK--I have been called a lot worse than that).


Don't get me wrong. There are certain places that I do like to visit. Let's start with St. Augustine, FL, the oldest city in the United States. The city was founded in 1565 (42 years before Jamestown) by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles under the orders of King Phillip II of Spain. The old coquina shell fort still stands as do the original city gates nearby which is the oldest wooden schoolhouse in the country. If you like history, it is an amazing place to visit. I will be going there--again.


My favorite places to visit are Civil War battlefields and, without a doubt, Gettysburg, PA tops the list. If there is anyplace I love to spend time it is at Gettysburg. This place is truly hallowed ground. The battlefield is immense covering many square miles and over 50,000 young Americans died here from July 1 through 3, 1863. When I visit Gettysburg I am overwhelmed by what happened here almost 150 years ago. If you go up to "Little Round Top" and stand next to the statue of General Warren you can look down at the "The Devil's Den" and "The Peach Orchard" and actually sense the fury and chaos that went on there on day 2 of the battle. Standing up on "Cemetery Ridge" you can look out across the vast field that leads to a line of trees. Picture 15,000 Confederate soldiers, under the command of Gen. George Pickett, stepping out from those tress and heading toward you. Imagine waiting and waiting as they slowly advance across the several mile long field. Then, all hell breaks loose as thousands of muskets and cannon began blasting away. "Picketts Charge" fails and the division is almost wiped out. This was the final battle at Gettysburg and the beginning of the end for the Confederate States of America.. Four months later, Abraham Lincoln, delivered the Gettysburg Address here and you can visit the boarding house where he stayed the night before as he finished up the two and a half minute masterpiece. Of course there are other battlefields like Fredericksburg, VA and Chancellorsville and Antietam and Fort Sumter off the Charleston, SC coast.


Well, I guess I just like history. Sometimes, when you go these places, you can just feel it.
