She has a little guest post for you all ... Creatures of the Dark Desires Series ... ENJOY!
Vampires in Space…
This week, BLOOD AND METAL, book 5 in my Dark Desires series releases, and today I’m going to talk a little the different species that inhabit the Dark Desires world.
First, maybe it’s worth mentioning how the series came about…
A few years ago, my husband asked me, over breakfast one morning, why didn’t I write a good book? He survived...just, and it turned out that his idea of a “good” book was one with no romance, no vampires, no werewolves, and no aliens. I said I’d write him a thriller and I tried (and okay, I pretty much failed—the final book, The Descartes Legacy, had a whole lot of romance and even a little bit of alien). Anyway, in the aftermath of that, I decided that I would write a book for me, and it could contain absolutely anything I wanted, all my favorites.
I’d been watching Firefly (for about the fifth time) and I wanted to write a space opera about ship. When my pilot, Ricardo Sanchez (and the hero of book 1, Break Out) turned out to be a vampire, I didn’t fight it. And so the series began.
The books follow the adventures, romantic and otherwise, of the crew of Rico’s space ship, the Blood Hunter. And once I’d accepted vampires in space, it seemed a little unfair to exclude anyone (or rather anything) else.
So who’s out there in space…?
- When man fled from Earth, they eventually stumbled across the Trakis system, and there they discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. A new class comprised of the super-rich and immortal soon evolved. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe. Along with immortality, anyone who takes Meridian also becomes telepathic, and as time goes on it seems there are a few other, less welcome, changes in store.
- Then there are the genetically modified people, or GMs. These are a mix of human and… anything. Tannis, the captain of the Blood Hunter, is part snake. Daisy, the heroine of Blood and Metal, is part plant (bet you can’t guess what sort) and was a lovely shade of green before she became a vampire and lost her access to sunlight.
- Obviously, there are vampires, though not too many of them. When the ships left a dying Earth, there was only room for a chosen few. Rico, and a group of acquaintances, arranged for a number of the humans to be replaced by other things…
- So far, out of those other things, we’ve encountered werewolves (Jon the hero of book 2, Deadly Pursuit, is a werewolf) and briefly demons.
- Then there are dragons, but I don’t think I’ll go into them in much detail, just to say they turn up in book 4, Temporal shift, and are a big surprise to a lot of people (and not a nice one.)
- Oh, and cyborgs
- And finally, there are ordinary humans, but I like to keep them to a minimum and they tend to be the bad guys.
So can you think of anything I’ve missed? Who or what else would you like to see in space…? Let me know for a chance to win an ecopy of Break Out, book 1 in the series.

Author bio:
Nina Croft grew up in the north of England. After training as an accountant, she spent four years working as a volunteer in Zambia, which left her with a love of the sun and a dislike of nine-to-five work. She then spent a number of years mixing travel (whenever possible) with work (whenever necessary) but has now settled down to a life of writing and picking almonds on a remote farm in the mountains of southern Spain.
Nina writes all types of romance, often mixed with elements of the paranormal and science fiction.
