Review of This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers

Paperback, 320 pages
Expected publication: June 19th 2012 by St. Martin's Griffin
Young Adult
Received from NetGalley

It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

Review:
WOW! First off this book is not going to be for everyone. It is gritty, raw and gruesome. There are a lot of things that maybe 14 and under should not read. *Totally my opinion!*

I LOVED this! like I said it's raw and gritty and gruesome and EMOTIONAL! It will make you take a look at yourself and say "What would I really do in a situation like this?" The characters in this book are hanging on by a thread and then are put through the ringer...again and again.

The world building is spot on in putting you deep in this mess that has become the world. It will also put you through the emotional ringer.

Sloane is amazing. She doesn't set out to be and probably thinks she isn't but man I think she is. The things she has had to face/go through and then to be sucked into the middle of everything is just sad. She handles everything with detachment of a sorts but that changes and it's not an automatic event. It's a slow going process which is natural. All of the others are a mixed group from "before". All are very releateable in their own way and you will get attached.

This is a MUST read... *There is cussing everywhere but it's not out of context or anything. I would expect 17/18 year old to be talking like this in this situation.

  11. This is Not a Test has a great flow and some good characters. If you're looking for zombies, you won't really find them here beyond a few scenes. However, if you like claustrophobic stories about where people are thrown together and become much different after society collapses, then this is the book for you.
