Author of Tempest...
Julie Cross
Joins me today with a little Q&A
Thank you to Julie who is extremely busy with Tempest coming out Next Week!
- When writing Tempest did you do any research or did you use your own rules?
I mostly used my own rules. I did a lot of research on New York City and pop culture for all the different years mentioned in the book. I also did a lot of reading up on the CIA, so much that they might start checking up on me soon.
2. Do the characters resemble anyone in your life?
2. Do the characters resemble anyone in your life?
No, not really. I think bits and pieces of me and people I know are sprinkled through my characters, but that’s because it’s easier to write what you know. For instance, my main character’s girlfriend, Holly is a former gymnast and that was much easier for to write than if she had played football or…cricket. I could write it authentically and not have to research much. Anything minor to the plot was usually an opportunity for me to slide in something that I already knew well…like gymnastics or being a camp counselor, which is how all three of my main characters met. At a summer camp.
3. Do you have a favorite character that you love to write?
3. Do you have a favorite character that you love to write?
My favorite character to write is actually a minor character in TEMPEST and plays a bigger roll in the second book. I’ll leave out her name to avoid spoilers, but with her, she says the most horribly blunt and inappropriate things. She’s totally bad-ass, so it’s really fun to bring her to life.
4. What is the nicest and craziest thing a fan has done for you?
4. What is the nicest and craziest thing a fan has done for you?
I have fans? Seriously? Kidding. Nothing crazy yet. It’s still early. But I did have one totally awesome book blogger send me the lyrics to a song her brother’s band, For Elise, had written because they went so well with TEMPEST. It was almost like it had been written for the book. Anyway, she told me it was available on iTunes and I don’t have an iPod or do anything with iTunes, so she mailed me a CD and I LOVE it! I thought that was so nice.
5. What is your writing space like? organized or messy?
I do have a writing office now, but I don’t use it much. I just write where ever. If I’m doing edits and I have pages plus my laptop, I have to have a clean table and a mostly clean room.
This or That...
You’re going to hate my answers. I’m a writer, so nothing is ever black and white

Coffee or Tea
Coffee is my addiction. I must have it or I’ll die. Iced tea, unsweetened, nothing added, is my very favorite non-alcoholic beverage.
Dress or Jeans
Sweat pants.
Okay, I’ll behave…dresses in the summer and jeans the other three seasons.
Outdoor girl or Indoor girl
Outdoor girl or Indoor girl
I love sun and warm weather, so I’ll say outdoor…except when it’s cold.
Eat in or Dine out
Eat in, it’s cheaper. And I have three kids, so eating out isn’t usually that fun with the whole gang.
Cheesecake or Lamborghini *yeah ok those are what I want sorry*
If the Lamborghini is free, I’ll take that. But cheesecake is my very favorite dessert…?
E-book or Real book
I love my Kindle, but lately, now that I have several book shelves in my office, I’ve been buying my favorite books already read as an e-book, just to have for my shelf. And also because when I love a book, I usually try to get everyone I know to read it and I need a copy to loan out.
Thank you again Julie!

ReplyDeleteI know right isn't she great?
DeleteI think it's interesting that Julie's favorite character in the book is a minor character and that she will have bigger roll in the second book. It makes people, and me, curious about who she is and what she's like, and then more people will buy the book just to find that out. Hehehe...
